The House Is on Fire by Rachel Beanland Summary

In the winter of 1811, the vibrant city of Richmond, Virginia comes alive with the excitement of the social season. As the General Assembly gathers and the gentleman planters, accompanied by their families, flock to the capital, the city becomes a hub of activity. Seeking respite from the darkness of winter, the elite society eagerly attends the theater, the center of entertainment and diversion.

At the city’s sole theater, the renowned Placide & Green Company from Charleston takes the stage, delivering two captivating plays each night to cater to the insatiable demand for amusement. On this particular evening, just after Christmas, the theater is filled to capacity with over six hundred revelers eager to escape their everyday lives. In the luxurious third-floor boxes, sits Sally Henry Campbell, a recent widow who cherishes any opportunity to relive the cherished memories she shared with her late husband. A floor below, in the colored gallery, Cecily Patterson finds solace in this temporary escape, grateful for a precious four-hour respite from a life that has recently taken a turn for the worse.

Amidst the grandeur and splendor of the theater, these two women, each carrying their own burdens, find themselves united in their desire for a momentary reprieve from their realities. As the curtains rise, the power of the stage transports them into a world of enchantment and possibility, if only for a little while.
