The Drowning Woman by Robyn Harding Summary

Lee Gulliver’s life takes an unexpected turn when her restaurant crumbles under the weight of failure, plunging her into insurmountable debt. Stripped of her possessions and left with nothing but her Toyota Corolla and the clothes on her back, she finds herself thrust into the harsh reality of homelessness. Seeking refuge in Seattle, she seeks solace by parking her car in a secluded spot near the beach, contemplating her uncertain future.

One fateful morning, Lee’s solitude is shattered as she witnesses a heart-wrenching scene unfold before her eyes. A distraught woman, consumed by despair, throws herself into the unforgiving depths of the ocean. Acting swiftly, Lee springs into action, rescuing the woman from the clutches of the relentless waves. However, instead of gratitude, she is met with anger and resentment.

The woman, Hazel, reveals the depths of her torment—a toxic and abusive marriage that has rendered her a captive within the confines of her own home. Lee’s intervention has inadvertently shattered Hazel’s fleeting chance to break free from her oppressive life. The weight of guilt bears down on Lee as she grapples with the consequences of her actions.

Now intertwined in Hazel’s struggle, Lee is faced with a profound choice. Will she turn her back on the troubled woman, respecting her desire to escape the pain, or will she find the strength within herself to help Hazel navigate the treacherous path toward liberation? Their lives collide in a complex web of empathy, resilience, and redemption, as Lee’s own journey of survival takes an unexpected detour into the depths of human connection and the fight for freedom.
