Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J. K. Rowling Summary

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book in the popular fantasy series by J. K. Rowling. It follows the adventures of Harry, a young wizard, and his friends Ron and Hermione at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In this book, Harry faces a new threat: Sirius Black, a notorious criminal who escaped from the wizard prison Azkaban and is believed to be after Harry. Harry also learns more about his past and his connection to Black, as well as the mysterious creature called the Dementor that guards Azkaban. Along the way, Harry discovers new secrets, makes new allies, and faces new challenges in his magical world.

The book is divided into 22 chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of the plot. The book begins with Harry spending another miserable summer with his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, who treat him poorly. He accidentally inflates his Aunt Marge and runs away from home, only to be picked up by the Knight Bus, a magical transport for stranded witches and wizards. He learns that Sirius Black is after him and that he is under the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts. He also meets his new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Lupin, who seems to have a mysterious illness.

At Hogwarts, Harry and his friends face various challenges, such as dealing with the Dementors that patrol the school grounds, learning how to deal with a boggart (a creature that takes the shape of one’s worst fear), and mastering a difficult spell called the Patronus Charm. Harry also receives a mysterious gift: a map that shows the location of everyone in Hogwarts, called the Marauder’s Map. He uses it to sneak out of the school and visit a nearby village called Hogsmeade, where he learns more about Sirius Black and his parents’ death.

The climax of the book occurs when Harry and his friends discover that Sirius Black is not a traitor, but a loyal friend of Harry’s father, who was framed by another friend, Peter Pettigrew, who is actually alive and hiding as Ron’s pet rat. They also learn that Lupin is a werewolf and that he, Black, Pettigrew, and Harry’s father were the original creators of the Marauder’s Map. They manage to capture Pettigrew and clear Black’s name, but are attacked by a horde of Dementors. Harry faints and sees a mysterious figure conjure a powerful Patronus that drives away the Dementors. He wakes up in the hospital wing and learns that Black has been captured again and that he will be executed by the Dementors.

Harry decides to rescue Black with the help of Hermione, who reveals that she has a time-turner, a device that allows her to travel back in time. They go back three hours and manage to free Black from his cell and save him from the Dementors. Harry realizes that he was the one who conjured the Patronus earlier, as he saw himself from the future. They also save Buckbeak, a hippogriff (a creature with the head of an eagle and the body of a horse) that was sentenced to death for attacking Draco Malfoy, a rival student. They use Buckbeak to fly Black to safety and return to their present time.

The book ends with Harry receiving a letter from Black, who thanks him for saving his life and gives him permission to visit Hogsmeade. He also sends him a gift: a Firebolt, a very fast broomstick. Harry is overjoyed and looks forward to his next year at Hogwarts.

This exceptionally well-written novel is all about suspense, thrill and drama, including the relationships between generations and what happens between long-standing friends. The characters are sensitively portrayed, as is their recovery, and the hopeful ending is realistic. Readers of domestic dramas will be enthralled. For those who love gritty, somewhat nasty mysteries with weird, and an exotic setting in one of the world’s most famous cities, this thriller mystery will satisfy. It is perfect for a long plane trip or a rainy weekend.
