A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews Summary

In the opening of A Complicated Kindness, Nomi Nickel, our spirited protagonist, laments the absence of the “better-looking half” of her family. With her mother and sister gone, she finds herself left alone with her melancholic and peculiar father,

struggling to piece together the mysteries behind their disappearance. As Nomi contemplates her seemingly inevitable future at the Happy Family Farms, a chicken slaughterhouse in the suffocating town of East Village, Manitoba, she yearns for the vibrancy of the East Village in New York City.

Through Nomi’s engaging and sardonic voice, this darkly funny novel paints a vivid picture of her bewildered sixteen-year-old perspective, trapped in a community governed by oppressive fundamentalist religion—a town that has shattered her family.

As we delve into Nomi’s story, we witness an eccentric and affectionate family slowly unravel as each member collides with the only community they’ve ever known. With fierce humor and tragic undertones, the author, who has made a striking impact in the American literary scene, presents a searing, tender, and comic testament to the complexities of family love that will leave your heart shattered.
