Women Talking by Miriam Toews Summary

Under the cover of darkness, a group of Mennonite women gather in a hay loft, their hearts burdened by a haunting secret. For years, these women, along with countless others in their colony, have endured unspeakable violations by demonic forces, punishing them for perceived transgressions. However, the truth has come to light. They were not tormented by supernatural entities but rather subjected to drugging and assault by men from within their own community. Fueled by a fierce determination to protect themselves and their daughters, the women set out on a mission.

As the men of the colony venture to the city, attempting to secure the release of the rapists, these women face a critical choice. Bound by illiteracy, isolated from the world beyond their community, and unable to speak the language of their new home, time is of the essence. Should they remain in the only existence they have ever known or dare to seize their chance at escape?

Based on true events, the powerful novel by Toews unfolds through the recorded “minutes” of the women’s all-female symposium. With wry humor and a politically engaged voice, the narrative unveils a tale of women embracing their autonomy and reclaiming their power to shape their own destinies.
